ЁЯзК Glacier Collapse Devastates Swiss Alpine Village: Blatten Buried Under Ice and Rock
On May 28, 2025, a massive portion of the Birch Glacier in the Swiss Alps collapsed, unleashing approximately 3 million cubic meters of ice, rock, and mud onto the village of Blatten in the L├╢tschental Valley. This catastrophic event buried about 90% of the village, destroying homes and infrastructure. Fortunately, the 300 residents had been evacuated earlier in May after warning signs emerged, but a 64-year-old man remains missing.
The landslide also blocked the Lonza River, forming a natural dam and creating a swelling lake that risks further flooding. Experts attribute the collapse to climate change-induced melting of alpine permafrost, highlighting the increasing threat of climate-driven natural disasters in mountainous regions.
