In a devastating event on May 28, 2025, a catastrophic glacier collapse in Switzerland’s Valais canton has buried approximately 90% of the Alpine village of Blatten under ice, rock, and mud. The disaster, triggered by the partial collapse of the Birch Glacier, has raised concerns about the accelerating impacts of climate change on mountainous regions.
Approximately 90% of the village was buried under millions of cubic meters of ice, rock, and mud. Fortunately, prior warnings allowed for the evacuation of all 300 residents and livestock, though one 64-year-old man remains missing.
The landslide also blocked the Lonza River, forming a lake that threatens further flooding in the region. Emergency services, including the Swiss army, have been mobilized to manage the crisis and assist affected communities.
