A massive section of the Birch Glacier collapsed, triggering a devastating landslide that buried approximately 90% of the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten in the Lötschental Valley. The landslide deposited millions of cubic meters of ice, rock, and mud over the village, leading to extensive destruction.
Fortunately, due to prior warnings from geologists about the glacier’s instability, around 300 residents and their livestock had been evacuated earlier in the month. However, one 64-year-old man remains missing, and search efforts have been suspended due to hazardous conditions.
The disaster also blocked the Lonza River, creating a temporary lake that poses additional flood risks to downstream communities. Experts suggest that climate change, particularly the thawing of permafrost, may have contributed to the glacier’s collapse.
