On May 28, 2025, the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten was devastated by a massive glacier collapse. Triggered by a rockfall from the Kleines Nesthorn peak, the Birch Glacier unleashed millions of tons of ice, rock, and debris, burying approximately 90% of the village. Fortunately, early evacuations saved all 300 residents, though one person remains missing. The disaster also formed a debris dam across the Lonza River, creating significant flood risks downstream.
