In the heart of the Swiss Alps, an entire village has been buried beneath a sea of ice and rock.
On May 29th, a massive section of the Birch Glacier in Valais collapsed, unleashing a devastating landslide that wiped out nearly 90% of the village of Blatten.
Over 300 residents were safely evacuated — but at least one person is still missing.
Scientists say the cause is climate change: melting permafrost weakening the glacier’s base, turning frozen ground into sliding earth.
As Europe warms faster than any other continent, experts warn: this could be just the beginning.
Will more Alpine villages face the same fate?
