Some of the fastest-growing metros in the U.S. are also the riskiest when it comes to climate change. And we’ve long puzzled: WHY? In this episode, we explore how the Great Recession, liberal housing policy and well-intentioned community decision-making have fueled our nationwide housing crisis and helped drive people to move into harm’s way.
We’ll dive into new First Street maps that unveil where people will be living – and fleeing – as the climate warms. So stay tuned to see if your home is on the map, and what we can do to build more resilient communities for the future.
Weathered is a show hosted by weather expert Maiya May and produced by Balance Media that helps explain the most common natural disasters, what causes them, how they’re changing, and what we can do to prepare.

With wealth disparity as it is, capitalism falls apart. Buildings that had 6-8 families when I was young, are now single family mansions in New York Ciry.
Wild to see the midwest labeled as climate safe after this year's tornado season 😬
Coastal cities are the most at risk, opposite of what this video says.
Another propaganda video.
Maiya nails her subjects. Every time.
Homelessness is NOT a result of too litlle housing, it is a result of FREE HANDOUTS ENCOURAGING HOMELESSNESS. That's why they all live in blue states. Poor governance and high taxes are why the blue cities are failing, but PBS does NOT APPEAR INTERESTED IN THE TRUTH AND SHOULD BE DEFUNDED IMMEDIATELY
Continue to feel that Chicagoland is highly underrated. Wonderful place to live.
Left wing, right wing, both wings on the same bird.
Found your own show, like many others have been doing!
140 MILLION HOMES IN AMERICA
6.5 MILLION ARE VACATION HOMES
THAT IS 1 HOUSE FOR EVERY 2 PEOPLE…. PLENTY OF F*CKING HOUSES
WE NEED TO BUILD HOMES OUT OF MATERIALS THAT LAST AND PROTECT OUR FORESTS/WETLANDS. PERIOD. WE DO NOT NEED MORE BUILDING/ DEVELOPMENT/ HOMES
The issue with states that have grown rapidly and built rapidly to accommodate the influx of people seeking affordable housing is the suburban land use pattern is financially insolvent. Property taxes do not cover the cost of maintaining all the infrastructure when it becomes necessary 15 to 20 years down the road. Prices are already or have already climbed in the states and they’re not a great deal.
Additional factors are going to include extreme weather as you’re pointing out, but these areas don’t have a lot of water either and especially ground water tremendous problem in areas that are not capable of handling that many people
Land value taxation
PBS must stay!
The sad truth is many people don‘t like living in the cold with very little sunshine, so I can‘t see them moving to Ohio, Wisconsin, or the Tornado ridden middle of the country.
Love PBS. The very idea that they will be defunded by this administration is abhorrent.
Us standards of building is abysmal. No fire resistance, no hurricane resistance, no flood resistance. Houses are made out of cardboard and sticks (2×2).
In Cyprus all buildings are made with a concrete frame and brick walls. And they can withstand fire (no flammable materials at all), flood (concrete is okay to be submerged), earthquake (frames).
And it's cheaper than us. And you can hit a wall with a hammer and not to have a hole
They do this in Dallas all the time.
A more recent example is the series of DART community meetings being held between 18:30–19:30 in areas around the metroplex.
The meetings have two problems, the evening schedule just after people get off of work, and none of the meetings are being held in areas that can be reached by mass transit.
This means that older white people and car owners will be deciding the fate of those who use mass transit.
As for the building houses cheap and quick. A lack of regulation in Dallas has led to developers cutting corners on building houses on good foundations, building inadequate storm drain systems, and building a power grid that shorts out during rains and flooding.
WHY ARE YOU SUCCUMBING TO MAGA PROPAGANDA? WHY ARE YOU DIVIDING US INTO RED AND BLUE? WHY ARE YOU BLAMING DEMOCRATS? YOU TRIED TOM KISS TRUMP'S ASS FOR FED DOLLARS BUT YOU LOST MY DONATION, ASSHOLES:( SHAME ON YOU!!!!!
Where can I find the original report First Street put together for this video?
I have never once moved because of climate. It has always been because of too many people in an area.
Rates of population increase, as far as a problem, supersedes climate change. Yes I know, desire to spread one's genes blah blah blah.Too much of a thing is a thing after all.
The anger at such a statement is why we as a species will probably not do anything useful to combat the environment's ability to balance an imbalance. We've tipped the balance while continuing to do so at an increasing rate.
It's not what we do so as much as it is the number of people doing it. No species of life has ever done anything to prevent it's own extinction. They simply rode the nature train. Our species has the awareness and ability to help itself. But I don't think it will.
