On May 28, 2025, the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten in the Lötschental valley, canton of Valais, was devastated by a massive landslide following the collapse of the Birch Glacier. Approximately 90% of the village was buried under an estimated 10 million cubic meters of ice, rock, and debris, equivalent to a magnitude 3.1 earthquake.
Fortunately, due to early warning signs—such as increased glacier movement and rockfalls—authorities evacuated all 300 residents by May 19, averting mass casualties. However, one 64-year-old man remains missing, and search efforts have been suspended due to unsafe conditions.
The landslide blocked the Lonza River, creating a temporary lake and raising concerns of potential flooding downstream. Precautionary evacuations were conducted in nearby villages Wiler and Kippel.
Experts attribute the disaster to climate change, noting that rising temperatures are melting glaciers and permafrost, destabilizing mountain terrains. This event serves as a stark reminder of the increasing risks faced by Alpine communities in a warming world.
