Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO says Zambia has deployed District Disaster Management Officers countrywide to strengthen disaster preparedness and response at local level.
Mrs. NALUMANGO explains that decentralizing disaster response teams is a proactive measure by government aimed at minimizing risks to natural disasters.
The Vice President was speaking in Geneva during bilateral talks with the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction
KAMAL KISHORE, on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Conference.
Mrs NALUMANGO expressed concern over the increasing frequency of climate-induced disasters such as floods, saying they continue to strain Zambia’s capacity to recover.
And Mr. KISHORE pledged UNDRR’s support towards the establishment of a Situation Room at Zambia’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit.
