The extinction of the Steller’s sea cow goes beyond overhunting. Genetic evidence reveals that the Commander Islands population was just a fragment of a range that once spanned the entire North Pacific during the Pleistocene. Natural climate changes had already drastically reduced their numbers even before Europeans arrived.
🌊 But the final blow came from a devastating ecological cascade: the decline of sea otters allowed sea urchins to proliferate uncontrollably, decimating the kelp forests that fed the sea cows. An entire ecosystem collapsed.
The most disturbing part? These gentle giants had 2.5 cm thick skin and 10 cm of blubber as adaptations to the Arctic cold, but they were behaviorally naïve — with no natural fear of humans. Their trust became fatal.
🔍 This 1768 tragedy mirrors current crises in our oceans. How many species are we losing today due to the same toxic combination: predatory exploitation + habitat destruction + ecological chain breakdown?

Some fishes are going extinct too because of over fishing
