This New Cooling Ceramic Can Cut Your Electricity Bill—and Cool the Planet
Scientists at the City University of Hong Kong have developed a revolutionary material called cooling ceramic that can cool buildings without using electricity or harmful refrigerants. Inspired by nature and made from alumina—a simple and heat-resistant material—the ceramic reflects 99.6% of sunlight and emits heat into space through passive radiative cooling (PRC).
Its hierarchically porous structure, created using low-cost methods like phase inversion and sintering, enhances its optical properties and durability. The ceramic is fire-resistant (over 1000°C), UV-stable, weatherproof, and mechanically strong—making it ideal for rooftops and walls in buildings.
By mimicking the light-scattering structure of Cyphochilus beetles and applying Mie scattering techniques, researchers achieved exceptional cooling efficiency. Field tests showed over 20% savings in cooling electricity, reducing reliance on air conditioning and cutting greenhouse emissions.
This innovation offers a sustainable, scalable, and eco-friendly solution to urban heat, rising energy demands, and climate change. Its potential for wide use in construction and disaster relief makes it a promising game-changer in the global push for greener buildings and cooler cities.
The research is published in the journal Science and is now moving toward commercialization.

Won’t rooftops need constant maintenance if this ceramic gets dirty or damaged? 🤔
Simple materials Big results Love seeing practical sustainability like this 😍
Huge respect to the minds behind this! Cooling without electricity is a real climate win.
Doesn't this still depend on clear skies to work well-what about rainy or polluted areas?
Impressive 😊
