The development story of the last two intertwined centuries is a marriage between fossil fuels and the internal combustion engine. As it pollutes the environment, climate catastrophe is its flip side. Now, the tipping point is approaching fast — recognized by the ‘Paris Declaration’ as a clear and present danger. The greater West, under the label of the ‘First World’, wants to maintain the status quo while asking the ‘Developing World’ to shoulder more of the burden by initiating mitigation efforts. Meanwhile, the Developing World advocates for adaptation, under the banner of climate justice. Consolidating ‘Carbon Markets’ can serve as a stepping stone before a consensus pathway is developed.
