A British man has died after he was buried by an avalanche at a ski resort in the French Alps, local officials have said. The man, 27, was near the roadside at the Val Thorens resort when he was swept up and carried 15 metres by snow on Thursday morning, a local prosecutor said. The Briton, who has not yet been named, had already gone into cardiac arrest when police officers arrived at the scene to pull him out of the snow. He was taken to a hospital in Grenoble, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, where he died later that evening. A new Swiss snowfall record has been set at the Bortelsee station in the Simplon region of Switzerland, where 89 inches of snow fell within just two days, and 97 inches accumulated over three days. This unprecedented event, recorded from April 15 to 17, 2025, now stands as the largest amount of snow ever measured in short timeframes in Switzerland, surpassing the previous records of 85 inches in two days at the Bernina Pass in April 1999 and 90 inches in three days at Weissfluhjoch in February 1990. The snowfall was primarily driven by the “Hans” depression, a low-pressure system that developed over the Gulf of Genoa. Named by Italian meteorological services, Hans channeled a strong southeasterly flow from the Mediterranean, carrying warm, moisture-laden air into the southern Alps.

My Glasgow born brother and family just returned from Les Arcs yesterday. Were meant to be home in Cheshire Friday. He was driving to Geneva. They couldn't get out because around 1.5 metres of snow fell overnight on Wednesday. Got an extra days skiing on Friday.
My dad who has skied all over Europe for decades, says a lot of snow at this time of the year was regular years ago, but not in recent years, especially due to the warmer climate.
