Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency said that on Wednesday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul and other areas. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries in the 16-million-person metropolis. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) and had its epicenter about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. The quake was felt in several neighboring provinces and in the city of Izmir, some 550 kilometers (340 miles) south of Istanbul. Several aftershocks followed, including one measuring 5.3.
