It strikes in less than a second, with temperatures hotter than the surface of the Sun — and it kills more people in India every year than floods, heatwaves, or cyclones.
We’re talking about lightning — nature’s silent assassin.
Every year, 2,000 to 2,500 deaths in India are caused by lightning strikes, especially in states like Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
Most victims are farmers, daily wage workers, and schoolchildren caught in open fields with no shelter.
But why is lightning getting deadlier?
• Climate change is intensifying thunderstorms.
• Rising heat and humidity increase atmospheric instability.
• Deforestation leaves people more exposed in rural areas.
• And awareness is low — many still take shelter under trees, which can be fatal.
To combat this, India has launched the Damini app, lightning warning systems, and public awareness campaigns.
Yet, lack of infrastructure and timely alerts still leave many vulnerable.
Lightning may seem like just a flash in the sky — but in reality, it’s a deadly disaster that strikes silently and quickly.
