A Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team has been working alongside local health staff in Kiribati to address health needs caused by the climate crisis. Kiribati is one of the most remote nations in the world, located in the central Pacific Ocean.
“We can see the effect of this climate change,” said Toaki Taburuea of Kiribati Climate Action Network. “Most of our people here, we love our island and we want to stay in our place.”
In June 2022, the government of Kiribati declared a state of disaster due to drought. The country is also facing air and sea temperature rises, storm surges and high winds, erosion, ocean acidification, flooding, malnutrition, and increased disease outbreaks.
