It’s a game changer. This week on Green Energy Futures, we look at a new net-zero home from Edmonton-based builder Landmark Homes that sells for under $400,000. This is competitive with code-built homes except your energy is provided by solar on the home, for the life of the home. http://www.greenenergyfutures.ca/episode/affordable_net-zero

Earthship homes have been net zero for over 20 years.
I want one. In Ontario. Yes please and thank you.
Haha earthships and straw bale timber framed homes can be net zero for 90% less expense utilizing natural and repurposed building materials. Seems like the green building industrial complex is building steam, pardon the punđ Couldn't resist noting this is a bunch of hot air, inaccessible to the masses.
That is a game changer, making #NetZero available to more families!
Wow. . . Net Zero for the life of the home. Must be nice… Except for, wait, what's the lifespan again?
I noticed the TV screen in the house providing a visual representation of energy usage? Presenting energy usage in a visual manner is key. I just bought a Toyota Highlander Hybrid and one of the screens presents energy usage, hopefully making the driver use a lighter foot on the accelerator? Your videos represent rapidly advancing technology in the housing sector also occurring in the aviation and automotive sectors. Another common element I see is system integration where the various house components work as a complete unit. The houses are very attractive looking as well.
affordable to whom??? the top 1% LOL
That is the most expensive small house I've ever seen! Earthships are a better design than this and cost less!
I was wondering if you have ever or have plans to build one of your homes in the New York (upstate) area. If so is there any media available to view the project.
I like it, but why aren't they storing the surplus power in a battery pack? Surely something like a Tesla Power Wall unit could be incorporated in this design. That way when back-up heat is needed you'd have a ready supply of power. And with Alberta's incredible sunshine any extra power could be part of a F.I.T. program. Also, was spray-foam insulation ever considered? It makes for an incredibly airtight structure and has great sound attenuation properties. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date with your informative videos.
Great video! I'm a Solar Consultant and Clean Energy Advisor in Florida, Puerto Rico, and 14 other states that offers just $1.86/watt, fully-installed prices (cash option, 1-story, asphalt shingle roof in Florida) BEFORE the 30% federal energy Investment Tax Credit (ITC) with Florida's most-credentialed solar contractor that's been in business since 1986.

Why not take the ambient air from the ceiling ? Since itis the hottest part of the house.
$400,000? so they spent an extra $200,000 on materials… to save money on the power bill?
The Price Tag . . . . . This is the future . . . For people with money ! . . . . We are NOWHERE near yet . . . Elitists only please . The rest of you peasants , go and freeze . This smily faced , conceited smart arse shit makes my blood boil .
Green Energy Homes and Green Energy Taxes
With Avasva plans doing something like that was easy.
This is a disguised ad for toxic bullshit. You do not need marketed chemical trash to have a home that efficiently and cleanly produces all the energy it needs for family to live in healthy comfort. Please don't support or buy into idiots like this. Consider this much at least….You should never need to wear a hazmat suit to build or insulate a home.
Check out the net zero houses in new Brunswick that are going up! Specifically Riverview! Looks very similar and has many of the same components.
Sip panels are just as efficient. Add the other materials used in this house and all at a lower cost.
Very impressive achievement.
What are the main remaining differences such as in construction and costs between this net zero energy cost (60% less energy) and a passive house (90% less energy)?
This company is setting the bar really high! Good job! I used to work for them.
Funny that the video ends with mentioning Vancouver, where a house such as this one would be close to $ 1 million
You just said 300,000 is the cheapest passive house. CHEAP IS UNDER 100,000.
Not only do you have to pay up the wazzoo for the âefficiency technology â, you get to pay the premium for the Harvard educated Techs to service and maintain it. Letâs not discuss this and hope the Millennials buy Into this scheme.
Why arenât we in the USA doing this? Letâs see oil wars in the Middle East!
Normal home 2500 as ft. So you only have half a house. $400k Ãˇ 1200 = $333 per sq foot. For net energy house
Financing
Purchase $400k
Finance $ 340k
@ 4.5% put $1850 plus insurance and taxes. Will it appraise new construction at $333 per sq foot? What is cost of energy bonus package?
Can you appraise the cost savings of $300 per month at 12 cents kWh? Will bank accept adjustment to loan formula of 32% when no $3600 annual lite bill?
The Oracle of Omaha bought Nevada power the consumer who spent $20k. Now no longer pays for system. Berry low net meter you are charge a fortune net meter can charge. You did not explain lower net meter. Local put has 12 cent rate.
A base connection fee $50 per month
High performance / net zero homes don't have to cost this much…

The resale value is great as well.
$$$$$$$$$$$ Great video! I'm the Founder of Florida Energy & Sun Co. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/floridaenergyandsun/about/ ). hum my home cost me $75000 it is 1700 sq ft. average total utility is around $150 a month. that is gas and electric. So around $55k to run the house for 30 more years. I could still net zero the house by putting 30panels out in the back yard or roof. No battery just grid tie. and still only add $15000 to the out of pocked and be net zero. My guess is that at almost $400,000 am going to see this (Mine) house torn down a long time before the difference in my utility cost come close to the cost of going net zero in this example. Net zero is great dont get me wrong, 75% of energy savings needs to start by making the house efficient. This always starts with getting the building envelop correct. Well sealed, great bulk water shedding, well controlled vapor and air barrier and getting the house down near the passive house standards. Add in some passive solar and you have a building to crow about. 1200 sq ft is a great starter home or retirement home size. So what are we looking at 600 sq ft space on each floor. Two bedrooms a bath a decent size amount of closet space and of course loosing usable footage with the stair and hall way. So not big. But the $333.33 per square foot is not anything I would call affordable.
$400 k is the lowest price to that date??? WTH!? WHY so much $? These houses are supposed to not have the expenses associated with chimneys and heating systems. Outrageous… no wonder they're so slow to gain acceptance.
Are you including battery storage for those cloudy days and long nights when the sun isn't shinning?
are there any netzero builders in Ottawa?
Also how do you keep the solar panels snow free during Winter days to generate Solar Power? What are the maintenance involved?
Could you tell me how much the heat pump and furnace combo is worth? I want one in my new house! Having trouble getting info around Saskatoon.
In what universe close to half a million dollars is affordable?
Love it
So many good things about houses built like this. They are on the higher up front cost side, but theyâre much less expensive and more comfortable to live in!
that price is fine and all, but it could be cheaper in the future. But great video.
Awesome! What about adding battery storage so you never have to worry about when the grid fails.
