For decades, a small village in Alaska has been disintegrating and falling into the surrounding river. And for decades, the village’s residents, most of them native Alaskans, have been asking state and federal agencies for the help and funding they need to relocate the entire community. So far, the money they’ve gathered falls far short of the estimated $130 million they’ll ultimately need to make that happen. Now, the village is running out of time.
Since it was founded in the 1950s, the village of Newtok has lost nearly a mile of coastline. The reason for that isn’t under dispute: climate change has caused the permafrost under the village to melt, allowing the surrounding water to eat away at the shore. Because of this, it’s not uncommon to see large chunks of land crumble and fall into the water during a storm. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, entire buildings along the shore could begin to fall into the water within the year. At the moment,there’s just 40 feet of land standing between the first house and disaster.
VICE News visited Newtok and spoke with residents who might soon lose their homes. In Newtok, VICE witnessed the loss of 10 feet of land — in just four days.

Is saving a town worth the US government spending approx $650k per resident? I feel for them, I really, really do, but I think a better solution would be a buy out. Give each resident 200-300% of their homes value (far less than $650k, but enough for them to start over) and they have to find a new life elsewhere.

Why it cost so much to rebuild? Why $40 million only finished 4 to 5 houses? I know there is a need for funding, but maybe that is what should be looked into! People are going to die! With that money you should have way more houses than that? These are not mansions? They are tiny house which the most should cost about $80 000!!! Americans for real – there was also a case where a hurricane had hit FL and those who were trying to get water after the hurricane – some counties were charging about $20.00 per bottle! It's like how do you make make profit in times like that? That's evil! What I see is normal erosion caused by waves, not sea level rise. I live in the sea side town established by Greeks, on sea level, 2300 years ago. Our waterfront is made of stone blocks and the sea is where it was before the city was built.
Maybe I'm naive but why can't they just boat it to the island they're wanting? There's four houses built but why can' t they do what Cambodia does for themselves? They start building to survive. This is sad to see, but economically I think you just move them to a city, ~400 people and they have received 40 million, that would be enough to give each of them 100k, which is more than enough to survive in an Alaskan city for several years. If they integrated into those cities then that seems a good solution. Relocating villages does not seem a good long term economic strategy. It will never stop and the number of villages and whole cities (Especially the high density cities in Florida and Texas), would just not be realistic to relocate.
Rising ocean levels are affecting only certain towns, while nearby sea-side villages remain high and dry? That's not how gravity works. I'll believe the Globe is Warming when I see newly-rich politicians stop buying seaside estates at Martha's Vinyard.
