1 thought on “The IDB and Belize: 25 years of sustainable development

  1. This is absolutely NOT accurate. The help is NOT getting to the people and it is shocking that they would suggest it is. The IDB has NOT met it's goal AT ALL and they pander to the politicians and none of the help gets to the people working in the trenches. The IDB does NOT understand the priorities of this county AT ALL and constantly does projects that ARE NOT HELPFUL. Here is what the actual priorities of Belize are. I would really like to go point by point from this video and tell how all of the projects they did are utter failures but I will simply state WHAT WE NEED. IDB does NOT dialogue with the people at all but only listens to corrupt politicians so I have no choice but to post this here publicly.

    1. We need MRI machine, CT scanner, radiation equipment, gynecology equipment, dialysis equipment and supplies and full cancer treatment center all for the poor. Violence and crime is so high because they are committing crimes to pay for those services which they cannot afford and they don't want their loved ones to die.

    2. We need free high school for all students.

    3. We need potable water for 37 villages and communities.

    4. We need vital statistics, police records, lands department, companies registry and every government office to have online processes that are fair and transparent (e governance). All offices are located in gang territories which means it is unsafe to go to the offices.

    5. We need domestic violence shelters in every district and proper support from police and court system and policy makers. We also need witness protection places.

    6. We need locked mental health wards and better mental health in every district

    7. We need a properly supported and equipped public hospital in the north, in the central region and the south that is free to the poor to reduce crime.

    8. We need funds for gang exit and transitional programs for men coming out of prison. There is not even a place for them to land or proper training. The training facilities are poorly equipped and no job placement after they complete training.

    9. We need proper help for the disabled and elderly in terms of monthly allocation. The condition of the disabled and elderly is appalling.

    10. We need solar on the homes of all poor and the ability to sell back to the grid. BEL regularly triples or quadruples bills out of the blue and then turns people off. There is corruption in BEL. Eliminate this by going to solar completely and upgrade the grid so people can sell back to the grid.

    11. We need overhaul of processes at companies registry to ensure the bad people can't set up here and steal land and that good investors can find transparent online processes and not have to go to 42 offices to function here with full online processes. There is 0 enforcement of companies that are no registered. Many churches and non profits operating here without registration and the processes to register are absurd. It took me 6 years and 11 tries and it is still NOT solved despite change in law that was rushed through by FATF.

    12. We need an overhaul of immigration and lands department HQ with full online processes. GOB is selling citizenships under the table. Land quarrels result in significant increase in violence. Subdividing family land should be free.

    13. We need an overhaul of Youth Services with full online processes. To say youth services is bad is the understatement of the century. Scrap it entirely and start over.

    14. We need to remove the words at the ministers discretion from all laws and policies. You cannot get anything done here unless you can reach a minister and you can't reach a minister if you are a poor and uneducated person.

    15. We need an overhaul of many laws and acts such as witness protection, domestic violence and human trafficking, environment and public health acts. Did you know that victims of human trafficking are referred to in the law as child prostitutes. We have NO NGOs that provide free legal counsel and help you sue the GOB for failure to do their job.

    16. We need to overhaul the NGO and NPO processes and sort out volunteers and missionaries who come and do programs but don't understand the priorities and are out of compliance with the laws in regards to legal status, work permits, movement of money etc. We need NGO's that provide free legal support to sue the GOB and for other matters like land titles and subdivisions and vital statistics and human rights violations but GOB has blocked the set up of any NGO that wishes to provide legal support. They made me remove that entirely in order to get registered.

    17. We need to stop selling land to foreigners period. Foreigners should have an entirely different property tax structure than locals. All property taxes to foreigners need to be raise or there needs to be some sort of enormous fee they pay annually for owning land here. There is nothing wrong with taxing foreigners differently than citizens.

    18. We need to get the lands documents online and public and searchable. The corruption in lands department is shocking and results in people killing each other. Land disputes over family land or because GOB issed land to multiple people result in a massive increase in violence and death.

    19. We need transparent processes for all grants and monies received by GOB and dispersed by GOB. They block all of us out of applying for grants by not putting the grant applications online, not responding to emails and refusing us the applications when we go in person. This is systemic structural violence. All monies go to cronies.

    20. Churches and missionaries need to reallocate 90 % of spiritual, emotional, time and financial resources to leaving the 99 and going to reach the men, specifically the men over age 30 and restore them to head of the home and help them become self sufficient, get off the grid, and become better providers and protectors for the women and children in their lives and communities. All NGO's need to refocus on empowering MEN over age 30 who are acutally the marginalized group in Belize. They have less access to education, training, resources, jobs etc.

    21. Roads need to be kept in good repair to reduce vehicular death and bike paths and walking paths on all new roads.

    22. Since we only produce 50% of the food we consume agriculture subsidies are a major priority.

    23. Campaign finance reform because foreign interests are 100% putting ministers into office to suit their own interests. See Vulcan Materials…they are going forward with mining even though GOB assured public that they were not.

    24. Anti nepotism law. Stop letting them hire their dogs, monkey's, uncles, cousins niece who has no skills.

    25. Severe CRIMINAL penalties when the GOB does not do their job. We can't even get our cases against them into court. I filed my case against GOB 5 times at supreme court and it was deleted all 5 times and they would not take my filing fees. My life was then threatened by GOB officials and police sent to my door to threaten me and remind me that people in this country disappear for pushing issues they have no business being involved in. I still can't get my case to court and with no ombudsman for years there was no way forward. Ombudsmans office is now functional but appointed by the GOB. How the hell are they supposed to investigate and remove the people who put them in office.

    26. Auditor general needs to be completely independent and not receive money from National Assembly because everytime she pushes NA to review the 17 reports sitting on the table for years then she is informed her budget will be cut etc and not one of those cases has been reviewed or addressed by NA. Its a joke

    27. Police cannot investigate police. We need an independent body to investigate police.

    28. UNCAC has not been ratified and is not enforced.

    29. There is NO enforcement of any laws related to anything. You can't even get forestry or DOE to enforce anything, you call police and 911 says they will send a patrol and none come, you report corruption and you get threatened even though it is supposed to be anonymous.

    30. There is not even a government directory explaining who is responsible for what and most websites are out of date and phone numbers go unanswered in GOB and voicemail is always full and unchecked and emails go into spam. CITO needs to be overhauled completely and all processes centralized. The messages from the people only make it to GOB if you go in person and talk to them and they will only talk to you once then they stop returning phone calls if you try to hold them accountable. If you push for transparency from Climate Change Office and online grant processes that are available to all then the director will threaten to call the police. If you push for transparency related to yoru rightful access to international funds that GOB has received to help the people you are blocked out from even applying for funds or getting any money. If you push for changes in broken processes or try to hold them accountable to do their job they block the opening of your NGO bank account behind the scenes so that you cannot function. If you push for proper procedures at voting places police threaten to lock you up and demand you leave. If you push for a minister to be investigated suddenly your companies registration is no longer valid. If you push for DOE or Forestry to do their job they refuse and they refuse to respond to you and the refuse mediation even if you call and email 400 times and then they send police to threaten you at your home. If you attempt to take GOB to court your efiling is deleted 5 times and they refuse to take your filing fees and then you get an anonymous threat saying that they are going to take you out when you have surgery next week. The ways they fight back are very very very dirty.
