Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has threatened to cross the floor and vote against any 2050 net zero emissions targets describing any such climate policy as “mythical” and opposing the position adopted by leader Michael McCormack.
While Prime Minister Scott Morrison has outlined a broad net zero goal, there is no firm timeframe or legislation underpinning the climate commitment.
An agricultural exemption has been floated by Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Michael McCormack; however, critics counter the exemption would negatively impact the farming industry and be a missed opportunity in the long run.
Mr Canavan said he didn’t agree with Mr McCormack’s take on the issue, arguing “it was a bit like saying if we just shut down 95 per cent of our economy but protect five per cent, everything will be okay”.
“How are we gong to mine coal. How are we going to expand and develop northern Australian agriculture, if we’re not allowed to clear land, if we’re not allowed to build coal mines.”

And it is a myth. Modern society is build on CO2 emitting industries and products. Steel, concrete, plastics, all manner of petro-chemicals, and energy demands …. to name just a few. The notion of replacing all these industries and products with alternatives that don't produce CO2, or so little that a few trees will offset it is fanciful nonsense.
The world can't even get its population growth under control, the most fundamental driver of ever and ever increasing resource demand.
