In the ’80s, scientists discovered there was a hole in the ozone over the South Pole. A significant layer of gas that deflects much of the sun’s radiation was disappearing much faster than anyone expected. Projections suggested it would collapse by 2050, increasing skin cancer rates, harming crops, and destroying the marine food chain. The situation was dire. But today, we are on the path to recovery.
Dr. Susan Solomon, among other scientists, contributed key findings to understand what was depleting the ozone layer and how to address it. In this video she takes us back to her expedition to Antarctica, breaks down how we managed to fix this huge problem, and looks at our next big environmental challenge — climate change — with the unbridled optimism that drove her to fix the ozone hole.

Hi! Christina here — I wanted to share NASA’s World Avoided scenario with you. As a child of the ’80s, the threat of the ozone hole was always something I was aware of, but this model really helped me understand the catastrophe we would’ve faced had we ignored it: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/features/WorldWithoutOzone
Thanks so much for watching our video! Let us know what you think in the comments below.
First ozone now climate change..what’s next?…
It’s because the narrative wasn’t going the way they predicted so they dropped it and found something new to scare us with!
Well. It was generally an easy problem to solve – just find a different gas with similar properties as freons and you're home. While trying to find an alternative source of energy – that is also cheap, because we all need ELECTRICITY isn't easy and sometimes I find myself wondering does it even exist. If we look for something for so many years and the costs are just skyrocketing and no real solution is found then there should be doubts.
Wow, this just got recommended to me now. It's been 2 years ago, I wonder how the ozone layer is now
This was a good video until you mentioned climate change.
When I was growing up the ozone hole was in news weekly
It’s healing ? And everything is about how bad climate change is ? Lies
Mainstream garbage lies
I mean, what if thats what the northern lights really is, is the open ozone spoken of..?
Remember being told that space rockets destroyed massive holes but I guess that was fixed?
I think they're embarrassed. Removing Freon was supposed to fix it. I'm guessing it's a reoccurring vent that removes those greenhouse gasses and vents them out of the atmosphere. But they'll never admit it.
It was not discovered in 1986. It was revealed in the British Sunday Observer, in 1975.
First minute says everything you need to know…
> In September 2023, the Antarctic ozone hole was one of the largest on record, at 26 million square kilometers. The anomalously large ozone loss may have been a result of the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption.
i remember hearing about it as a kid and haven’t heard about it since this is refreshing
climate change is not personal, perceptible kind of and not practical. Too hot or cold? AC. Practical in price point, you can easily get a new spray can or a fridge but not vehicles that drives the economy
govt can't really agree as well in COP meetings, too much personal income at stake
Why you don't hear about humanity anymore
Are they totally unaware of the hole in the ozone that appeared above the North Pole 5 months after the Japan nuclear nuclear power plant blew up???
All lies! You claim that cfcs last for a hundred years then say that the ozone repaired itself in les than thirty. Or is it that you just realized that it wasn't a problem and had to save face by not admitting that you were wrong, but just had to claim that you fixed the problem. Now you're just moving on to your next big sky is falling catastrophic event to gain money and power.
Continental united states?
El problema no radica en que la humanidad contamine, sino mas bien en la CANTIDAD de gente que contamina
David attenboroughs favorite video, but no, seriously.
Oh can we do the same for climate change?
Oil money: No.
This story deserves a movie
So much misinformation you don't want to see what you said contradicts itself.. remember the polar caps we're already supposed to have melted and we're all supposed to be dead. Then why are we finding an ancient civilizations under the ice they had to be there before the ice so why don't you try on some real science quit studying the effects on the earth and look at the cause of the climate, that would be the Sun
Sounds like a big business cash grab to me. A hole in the ozone over Antarctica for that long and the UV rays didn't melt the continent down. Cash grab.
You really have no idea how this planet works. I think all you are doing is keeping money in your coffers.
This cow doesn´t give milk anymore.
But hey, at least we got the CO2 tax, right?
good thing we're bagging all those cow farts
and selling them to Aliens 👽
i have a ozone generator should i have it always running?
Here what i think : climate change is here on his normal cycle. But, we,human amplify the crisis
