Climate Justice says KZN floods not a natural disaster, opens case against President: Janet Solomons

The Climate Justice Charter Movement has opened a case of culpable homicide against President Cyril Ramaphosa and other government entities. In addition to the President, people cited in the docket are ministers, the deputy chair of the Presidential Climate Commission, the KZN premier and the mayor of eThekwini Metro. The justice activists say the suffering endured by communities in KZN where over 400 people have died is not a natural disaster but due to negligence. To explain their stance, we are now joined by Climate justice charter activist, Janet Solomons.

Flaunting of building codes or not enforcing the regulations and informal settlements along banks of rivers, inefficient or blocked storm drainage systems, poorly constructed infrustructure like roads and bridges, municipalities are definitely culpable.
How does one address structurally weak slopes that had been invaded for housing. How do you relocate such a number of houses out of such slopes, a very costly exercise. However, slopes that had in the recent years collapsed and caused destruction need to be investigated for stability and decisions made after many consultations with affected parties and relevant stakeholders. Slopes due to their gradient will be susceptible to landslides if ground has been disturbed and they are subjected to heavy rainfall. Higher rainfall than normal can loosen the soil causing it to disintegrate and slide. Unoccupied slopes can be investigated for level of stability and demarcated as No Go areas if they have unstable soils or unstable underground geological material such as shale
If it's negligence, does it therefore mean it's not a natural catastrophy. How do we define a natural disaster.. some people need to use a dictionary before they get humbled in the court of law
