Net zero policies risk ‘crushing British businesses if imposed in the wrong way’, the Energy Secretary has said.
Claire Coutinho warned against a green “leviathan of central planning” and argued that it should be the free market, instead of the state, that drives progress towards climate goals.
The UK’s target of reaching Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 is enshrined in law and has been backed by all governments since Theresa May was in power.

The government can just override the Climate change act. The government can undo any law ever made if they have the will, even international laws applied in the UK. Its only people against override that say otherwise.

The climate policy committee is operating under false premises as the data they rely on is not empirical data but computer modeling using assumed parameters which are widely inaccurate! The IPCC in their latest summery make no claims of crisis or out of the ordinary movement in Global temperatures! in fact they point to significant drops in Hurricanes, Floods and Wild Fires. It is the MSM that blame any event on climate change in an attempt to spread fear in the people.

when we only produce 10% of the total CO2 in the world. The cost of net zero to businesses and ordinary households is not worth the benefit that it will produce. All the politicians are just trying to be seen as doing something and not that they are achieving anything in spite of the costs to society. They just follow what the climate change conferences spout right or wrong.There is too much doom and gloom frightening Society into doing what they say.
In the real world, none of the experts know what damage CO2 is causing if any. They are using climate modelling techniques to arrive at the answer not Using real data. A small error in their calculations can change the outcome

Nothing wrong with trying to help the planet I am sure we would all agree, but net zero is a total non starter. No amount of legislation is ever going to make it work.
You have missed the elephant in the room. The percentage of the atmospheric that is CO2 is only 0.04% , if it goes below 0.02% plant life starts dying which means we ALL die. In 2019 NASA stated that the earth has gotten greener over the last twenty years thanks to countries like India and China. What do those two countries push out? Lots of CO2.

It’s great that you mentioned China. They are taking a very aggressive approach to green energy. They are building massive solar and wind power stations. They have developed world leading electric batteries and nearly 50% of new cars sold in China are EVs. They see all this new technology as a way to dominate the rest of the world. Meanwhile, many people in the US, UK and EU are whingeing about it being too hard and expensive. We will wake up in 10-20 years time to discover that we have lost another chunk of our manufacturing and we are poorer, because we did not have the vision or courage to innovate.
Until the climate cult are forced to debate their assertions in public against genuine climate scientists, who have spent decades doing real research, the policy makers will be able to continue this nonsense. Its pretty much the same as the trans issue where once the curtain is pulled back and everyone can see the truth we will be able to challenge 'the science says' argument.
Climate change is one of those things that people are going to debate in decades to come, if not centuries. It's like the Left and Right in the French Revolution or Marxism vs Capitalism.
The problem with Net Zero as a policy, specially in Western Europe, is that it is being driven by governments. These governments are traditionally weak and slow because of the fact that they are democratic. Industrial plannning is not their forte. In the UK, a relatively simple decision like Heathrow's third runway, became subject of debates for more than a decade without getting to a definitive conclusion. Net Zero, if at all is possible, should be driven by private business.
The UK government should focus on simple manageable tasks, such as: flood defenses, reform of the planning rules to enable a better stock of housing, better public transport, widespread cycle lanes in flat areas, etc.
We have been paying so called "green taxes" for years – it is making a few people very rich, so not everybody is a loser – just the majority.

Always the same BS, we need MORE renewables, and we need huge battery storage, and we need to get rid of burning fossile fuels. Transition to EVs and heatpumps are as well a smart and important move that should be pushed wherever possible, to reduce excessive hight and unneccesary primary energy usage.
EVs save 70% energy compared to ICE cars, heatpumps save up to 85% compared to other heating systems.
The focus on climate and CO2 is nonsense, but everybody should have realized by now that fossile ressources are finite, extremely expensive, and cause havoc for environment and health when we burn them. In 50 or latest 100 years oil is gone, guess what would happen then when we did not manage to transit to 100% renewables.
As wind, solar and battery storage is getting cheaper by the day, this discussion is pointless, it's no rocket science to build enough storage, just do it and stop whining. Had we used all the money that we wasted in this terrible covid "measures", half of that task would have been already completed.
I am completely convinced by the reality of catastrophic climate change. I am totally persuaded that temperatures will rise quite a number of degrees Celsius in quite short order and at sea level rise will be immense and disastrous for coastal cities.
That said it is insane for Britain and indeed for Europe to attempt to destroy the functioning of the local economies by interposing on an already creaking base and technology base Ludacris energy cost increases. It is equally stupid to force, nonfunctional heating and transport systems onto already impoverished citizens.

It is ridiculous because Britain account .3 of 1% of global carbon emissions and hold of Europe between 5 1/2 and 7% depending on how it is measured.

If I’m a rational approach would be to both constrain carbon burning by using a price mechanism where effective Was spending resources on attempting to construct an infrastructure and food supplies system that can withstand to some degree the horror that is coming and that is now completely unavoidable. What is happening now? Is it displacement socialism, What is happening now is central control As was the case in the male administration and pointless lockdowns of the recent pandemic.
The worst thing is net zero by 2050 is a complete impossibility and everyone with any brain and knowledge and honesty of approach knows that perfectly well.

It is treasonous that both this Government and Labour are banning burning wood, coal, gas and oil (destroying our energy security) whilst we are still dependent on France to top up our electric grid.
Germany raised 5 villages to the ground to continue open cast mining of Lignite (brown coal) one of the most polluting fossil fuels. Whilst in the UK, Boris closed down and immediately exploded our coal fired power stations and planned to halve our gas storage (only 4 days – already the lowest in Europe) before it was discovered and stopped.
We SHOULD have already placed orders with Rolls Royce for their small nuclear reactors BUT instead the Government have delayed the decision for NINE years!!

To have net zero we have to go backwards.. gas=carbon, electric=carbon, vehicles=carbon, increased population=carbon, mobiles=carbon, farm machinery=carbon, material production=carbon, basically any that need to be made in a factory or need fuel creates carbon.

These targets, policies, carbon credits, and carbon taxes have nothing to do with saving the earth's climate. Its all about money and the more the government can rake in the better . They know there is no crisis just like you Julia but this is an excellent vehicle for more taxes , people will comply if they are scared of this scam. People need to wake up and do their own research, it took me 5 minute years ago to find out that 97% of co2 emissions comes from the earth itself , less than 3% comes from human activity. Only 1 mp voted in the net zero climate change bill. None of them have bothered to read the science behind it. If they did they would see it all lies and deceit.

Cheapest way to produce electricity in this country is by land based wind turbines, closely followed by solar and sea based turbines. Storage of excess energy in batteries, with back up from eye watering expensive nuclear, and cheaper hydro based generation. What's not to like? That's what will make us independent of the vagaries of world energy prices and will stop us having to rely on Qatar, the USA and the Saudis for our energy requirements. A whole new UK industry to be developed, giving us cheap energy for the future.

Read some of your comments. The basic science, that less CO2 = colder, more = hotter, has been known since the 19th Century. The (then very remote) possibility that the CO2 we were adding would increase average global temperatures was getting discussed by the 1910s. The fact that a lot of that was in the pipeline was alarming climate scientists by the 1970s. But, Exxon etc thought profits more important than truth and persuaded all you numpties to ignore reality.

If climate change is real then cut back on industry as well. Don't buy new keep repairing your old items to save the planet.
