A lot of people saying deforestation, resorts and things like that but the real reason for this issue is check dams. Check dams actually cause floods. In the entire Kerala due to small check dams, there are almost 50+ in a single river. Check dams don't have shutter so they decrease the flow of water and that causes sedimentation. Places like Muvattupuzha river has 20 feet of sedimentation and because of that, ground water level has gone up. Now when it rains, the water holding capacity of soil is no more and it bursts like in Wayanad. This is what exactly is happening.

If you remove trees along hill slopes, you are actually inviting a river to flow along that free pathway whenever a heavy rain takes place. Trees, plants and grass are like sponges that absorb most of the rainwater and reduce the flow of water.
Awareness is essential for the common people, the politicians, real estate mafias, etc. on this matter.

Government should not allow unathorise construction on hilly areas and stop ample of modernisation.bcoz of hilly area are prone to landslide in rainy season.indian government should do archological survey of each hilly atea in india which are prone to this disaster.over modetnisation and construction should stop in this area
People from higher authority need to prepare these cities where landslides happen to prevent in future … otherwise later end up regretting losing lives .. and this has happened several times duing flood in kerala, and that dam is another example which will be disaster ..if things dont act the right way to act before its too late .coz mother nature is unpredectible and can happen anyday , anytime or any sec ..so always be caution when extreme weather comes .as kerala is prone to rain and floods.
