Hurricane winds are likely to reach 200mph as climate change intensifies storms around the world. Today, the strongest hurricanes reach wind speeds of 160mph. Researchers at the Florida International University are using the Wall of Wind. This system of turbines simulates a hurricane with 157 mph wind speeds and replicates the effects these storms have on buildings. This allows engineers to design disaster-resilient homes and buildings. Innovative designs can lessen wind pressure on buildings. Reducing storm impact also decreases the damage from flying debris but this isn’t enough to prepare us from more extreme storms. Since 1975, rates of category 4 and 5 hurricanes have increased worldwide and now we need to prepare for even stronger storms. Researchers are creating a new facility able to generate winds over 200 mph to help us adapt to higher-intensity storms and improve our disaster resilience.
