India’s Plan To Power Private Industry With Nuclear Power Explained |
India’s bold nuclear energy push is transforming its path toward clean, renewable energy. Through the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) and large-scale nuclear power plants, India is reshaping its nuclear policy to tackle carbon emissions head-on. In a pioneering move, the government is allowing private industry access to nuclear power, marking a historic shift. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) will manage these new reactors, while private players will fund and provide land for construction, a significant evolution in India’s nuclear policy. This could bolster not only India’s economy but also its status as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.
Will India’s Private Industry Be Powered By Nuclear Energy?
Currently, India operates 22 nuclear reactors, ranking seventh globally, and is on track to expand with 50 new SMRs, producing energy efficiently for sectors like steel and cement. These small modular reactors, generating up to 300 MW each, provide a compact, scalable nuclear power solution aligned with post-Fukushima safety standards. Unlike traditional reactors, SMRs are mobile and cost-effective, which fits well into India’s nuclear strategy.
India’s Biggest Nuclear Energy Gamble Starts Now!
With Prime Minister Modi’s push, nuclear power is set to grow from 2% to an estimated 9–10% of India’s total energy mix by 2031, aiding in India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. This initiative aligns with global climate goals, highlighting India’s commitment to tackling climate change while also meeting its economic and industrial demands.
Will Nuclear Energy Make India a Superpower? Bold Plans Revealed!
India’s nuclear energy gamble, moving beyond fossil fuels, could position the nation as a superpower. But the question remains: can nuclear energy sustain the growing needs of the Indian economy? And is it worth the risk considering past nuclear disasters? This high-stakes decision could redefine not only India’s energy landscape but also influence the world’s transition to renewable energy.

Good news for Bharath. We have the technology so we don't have to depend on others
I've been following your channel for the last 6 months, and I must say that the topics you cover and your style of presentation, are great! Really an under-rated channel!
I have been advocating (in my own small circles) for going big on nuclear energy, in India, since a long time. The only problem is that the previous administration has not funded nuclear plants sufficiently! Not just that there, there has always been an undercurrent of misplaced 'fear' in the political community, with nuclear fuel. But India has proved over the decades, it's impeccable safety record in the nuclear stream. I feel that the time is ripe for India to commission a Thorium reactor ( although there has been a lot of talk, for a long time)! Thorium reactors are inherently very safe and India has got a lot of Thorium to last many centuries!
Yes, we can do it. People have to understand that for achieving these goals, political stability is prerequisite.
India, being a tropical country, should be using Solar to a greater extent, making it mandatory to have all new build properties have a solar plant to support at least 25% of its consumption. That way, India can go net zero in the next decade, with all energy consumption from renewable energy and motor vehicles being converted to hydrogen or electric.
India is on the right path with nuclear energy
Excellent channel and topics which are covered. Keep up the good work you are doing👍
It will be powered by Thorium, not uranium or plutonium, which is far safer.
