The climate emergency appears to have taken a turn for the worse this week as the world’s most powerful nation and second largest greenhouse gas emitter just elected a climate denier back into The White House. It’s tempting to think the cause of climate mitigation is now all but dead. But just at the top of a very black cloud there is a faint glimmer of a brighter lining, thanks to new analysis conducted by the European Environment Agency.

As a previously regular inhabitant of the Doomisphere I must confess that with the re-election of Trump, I am likely to serve out my days in the Gloomisphere.
No amount of good news is gonna counteract that disaster for both the USA, the free world, and our Earth habitat. A dark day in history on a par with Hitler invading Poland in 1939, with every chance of resulting in similar consequences
im so happy trump won
This channel is so pathetic.
DEW.
People have been very quick to link the floods near Valencia to climate change (and I'm sure that it is one important factor).
BUT having seen a geographer talk about the shear scale on development over the last 70 years in the flood plains I'm sure that was a more significant factor in the scale of the damage and loos of life.
The majority of comments here show why climate activists have not achieved more these past 30 years.
Market driven approaches can (and have) help to tackle climate change, but by linking tackling it to every niche left of centre policy climate activists have caused the right to tend towards climate denial.
Unsettled science….. Look for confirmation in a complex system and you will find it. Either way net zero at this point of development in society is suicide.
Yes, less chance of big mushroom clouds in the sky! 🤷♂️
the policy makers do the bidding of those that put them into power. that is, their campaign donnors.
and environmental policy tends to reduce the profit margins of some very powerful people. So hoping that the guys that only got their positions because of these powerful people will act against their masters is weird.
trump#24 lets burn fossil fuels, I'll do my bit and burn more coal and oil this winter…..bye bye nutty0
Thanks for the bonus video Dave 👍🏽
China imports are only good news for Australia as we have no native car industry
Is Europe counting the GHG emissions from biofuels, i.e. wood?
🍀🌎🌏🌍🍀
Trump lost, he cheated
republicans have NEVER WON fairly
Boycott all of USA
What gives ?
Dave is this the END !!!
Will you be back next Sunday ?
If you want to moderate flooding you need to radically change current land use practices and I don't see much of that happening at any scale around where I live (the mid-west of the USoA). Instead I continue to see more and more damage to the environment all in the pursuit of money. Anti-science, fear and willfull ignorance are all hand-in-hand as most people head towards even more destruction. We're killing off our support systems which eventually will mean less for everyone.
I wish I could be more positive, but I don't think kidney and liver cancer rates have been improving but are instead getting worse – this is a warning sign that you are not doing very good things in your environment.
Have you considered other Climate drivers like volcanism.
as others are commenting, Trump is, amongst many other things, going to put back climate progress by a big step, unless his new best friend Elon can convince him to support Tesla, though I'm not sure Elon believes in electrification either.
Luckily we will finally get rid of the electric cars with their polluting unrecycable batteries depleting our resources and identical windmills and solar panels. In Europe C02 is down as you killed the industry here with your bogus taxes and electric car mandates.
Climate change appears to be escalating, but you don't destroy the world's infrastructure in order to change it. Even an ape knows to not release the branch supporting it's weight before reaching for another branch. There are serious problems with EVs. They catch fire. They won't work in cold environments. They can explode when the batteries come in contact with salt water. Millions, if not billions of lives could be at stake is realized, but the destruction of the world's economies won't change things if everyone is forced to set around a cook fire in order to eat and stay warm. Imagine how much CO2 would be generated by billions of cook fires. There has got to be a better solution to the climate change issue. I think underground housing would drastically reduce the carbon footprint for housing and a suspended monorail system, using capacitive charge points to use as transportation. But that's just my way of thinking. But, such a system of housing and transportation would drastically reduce emissions. Of course, trucks would still be needed for supplies to be transported, but too much removal of CO2 soot from the skies would cause an increase in temperature as we have seen. This might be the branch the ape needs.
4:58 In the 1990s, the developed world began relocating polluting industries to China. While the pollution still exists, it's now on the other side of the planet. The achievement is far less significant than politicians claim.
A little bit of relatively good news on an otherwise dreadful day. Thank you.
The sky is falling the sky is falling sad the profiteering continues when we have had millions of historic weather ofer the billions of years.
When the biggest economy in the world doesn’t want to do anything about climate change, except make it worse, there is nothing to be optimistic about. Might as well sell everything you own and blow it all on hookers and Cocaine. What’s the point of wasting so much emotional energy wanting a better world when 90% of the population are only out for themselves, have little critical thinking skill, no education or intellectual curiosity and are motivated by fear, hate and greed….. and are proud to be that way.
I feel so sorry for the many Americans that did the right thing and avoided voting for the man whos name should not be spoken. They have to live with the idiots that did vote for him. All that aside, change can still occur. Leaders have never been the way to fix the climate it is industry and bussiness that really can push for change and the public pressure that is placed on them. Money makes change and the future MOVING to zero emissions is filled with opportunity and money for bright, innovative thinkers. As individuals we can still help achieve change in our purchasing choices i.e moving away from gas, buying ethical shares, pushing for your superfund to avoid fossil fuel industry shares. The future is brighter then we can all imagine we just need to move towards it and leave the tired past behind.
You climate fear mongers need to get a life and look into the other side of the science coin. Scientist that do real research and not read other "climate experts" headlines, know that our current climate is not the result of human activity but natural processes. Why don't you take a look any of the several videos from John Stossel where he interviews people that understand climate from a true perspective and not a political one.
Listen, if this was this was a one off event. But wait, this place was flooded twice in the last 200 years. Also the IPCC have stated that the frequency or intensity of severe weather is not increasing.. CO2 has nothing to do with anything.
well put
So, nobody could have stopped the downpour at this stage. However, the government was warned well in advance. so those deaths and images could have be reduced dramatically.
I bought a Gas Electric hybrid car instead of an EV for two reasons: (1) I cannot afford an EV, (2) the EV charging infrastructure is still totally inadequate.
There was a succesfuk experiment that reduced Methane emmissions from Ruminants by also feeding them a portion of some type of seaweed. I do not have a link to the source of that, but it sounded promising to me.
Of course we could sear off bovines in favor of poultry perhaps.
Not gonna lie. This one hurt.
People can't force all the world to stop emitting CO2. But we could at least prepare better for weather extremes. This should have started decades ago. Building reservoirs which are holding back water, is doable and cheaper in the long run.
Dave, please can you do a couple of detailed videos on the affect of neoliberal capitalism "growthism" on the climate and environmental emergency? It does seem our politicians, banks and ff corporations in particular are continuing to exacerbate the reality of the crisis globally, including the Westminter parliamentary system The latter being one of the most intransigent in retaining growthism (accelerating growth) in economic output for outputs sake. In other words, economic output not based on real use but on financial wealth accumulation. I think consumer goods sourced from foreign raw materials and produced overseas are not included in local figures for emissions or resource depletion, and the same with transport by sea, air and overland. We've exported it to cut labour and resource management costs. Thanks
How far is the reduction of emissions in the industry due to deindustrialization?
The EU beurocracy also stopped dredging and bank reinforcements
Green policies removed the dams that protected this area .
Pretty sure flash flooding has been happening long before humans were invented
I regret the votes of my fellow American for Donald Trump, who continues to view climate change as a [sic] "hoax." God help us, because apparently have lost the ability to help ourselves. I am grateful for those countries who have, "stepped up to the plate" [baseball expression] on this issue.
So Europe have reduced their emissions by nearly a third and how much difference has that made ???
Sure did cost a lot of money
lol. Hopium. Climate was already near hopeless and the US made it clear there is nothing that is going to get better if it costs billionaires a penny.
Is there any optimistic climate nows; yes, man has almost zero effect on Earth's climate. As for Spain, this is most likely US Nazi weaponised weather warfare, because Spain backs the Palestinians.😎

We were warned decades ago.
