If you want a reference point look at God's Word. The world and it's system is run by sinners and it's broken, and "the world lies in the lap of the evil one". Jesus told us that "in the world we will have tribulation, but take heart because He has overcome the world." We are sinners from conception as descendants of Adam. Man's heart is desperately wicked and sinful. We think that deep down we are good, but that is because our standard of good is so low. There is none good but God, Jesus said. We have a sin nature and are "at enmity with God." By one man (Adam) we fell but by one Man (Christ; fully man and fully God) we can be reborn (spiritually), all because He took the punishment for our sins on the cross. "For the wages of sin is death". When we seek God's forgiveness for breaking His Commandments, and put our trust in the finished work of Jesus, Who lived perfectly without sin on our behalf and took the punishment we deserve, and rose again, having conquered sin and spiritual death (Hell – our just punishment for sinning against a Holy God), we will be saved.
