Even as flames in Southern California continued to carve a destructive path on Friday and fire officials sought to assess the damage and determine how the fires began, a larger question loomed: Could this level of devastation somehow have been minimized, or is this simply the new normal in an era of climate-related calamities?
A CNN review of government reports and interviews with more than a dozen experts suggests the ultimate answer is a mix of both.
Los Angeles city and county officials have characterized the fires as a “perfect storm” event in which hurricane-force gusts of up to 100 miles per hour prevented them from deploying crucial aircraft that could have dropped water and fire retardant on the drought-ravaged neighborhoods early on. The consensus of experts interviewed by CNN was that the combination of those winds, unseasonably dry conditions and multiple fires breaking out one after another in the same geographic region made widespread destruction inevitable.

It costs a fortune to live anywhere in California. I get it, it’s a whole other world on the west coast and I just feel lucky to live in Texas. But along with every day living, Californians, especially LA County residents pay astronomical taxes on absolutely everything, so where is all that tax money going? That needs to be funding the very infrastructure of every city there in the form of fire and rescue, police, schools, the ability to have tools and people in place to handle that ‘different world’ and all it’s variants that create these insane and destructive events. I’m heartbroken for everyone there, people, pets and the very essence of life and the lifestyle.
This catastrophic disaster will affect everyone in the United States and the world for a long time to come. My grandchildren will be reading about this in their history books one day and I sure hope that the next generations to come will have all the tools to mitigate this when it happens again. Honestly this was all said and studied, as climate change those natural tragedies will increase, ocean will reclaim part of the cost, some areas will be more arid and less viable. Can We build better? Yes and No, it’s important to understand that during most human history when places become inhospitable people just moved away. The political leaders are rightly to blame. California is a state that has had constant wildfires since the dawn of time and not having a surplus of water, an abundance of firefighters, budgets increased, and every precaution ready is gross incompetence. Because after this I guarantee you that all these things will be in play and firefighting with be a top priority going forward. Unfortunately politicians think of their jobs as career stepping stones and fame and fortune and not “I have a serious job to do”.
