For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on the unprecedented January wildfires, FRANCE 24’s Nadia Massih is joined by Alexander Held, Senior Expert at the European Forest Institute (EFI).

Rather than living sustainably, let's live with the major water consumers in California, in billion mΒ³:
Cattle-feed crops: 19.5
Residential Use 15.2
Almonds 8.8
Other tree nuts 12.2
Alfalfa 4.4
Dairy 3.7
Other crops 30.6
Environmental use for minimum flow in rivers and for supporting ecosystems 2.5
Just don't tell me almond milk is more ethical or sustainable.
Rebuilding will not happen. This territory has now become fodder for the super-wealthy who can afford to build homes in fire-prone territory, and rebuild them again if they are burned in the future.
Middle-class people who have lost their homes will not get them back.
Yeah That's Hollywood. That was the rich area that burned in LA. No way they're give up their mcMansions for affordable homes
Early warning systems should have been installed in California to help contain wildfires. Quarterly fire and earthquake drills should have been made mandatory in the state. The fire hydrants, reservoirs and rivers in California should have been filled with water, (all year round).
None of these was done. When the dust settles, political recriminations will begin and heads will roll. And rightly, if I may say so.
We look at this coming since 1985. ( Anyone still belittlingg teens like Miss Thunberg, criminalizing climate campaigns?) – No one can say they didn't know. So what's your take now? All politicians who failed to change direction – or even still oppose doing so – go to prison right now, just for a start?
Looks like Gaza but without the thosands of dead children
I have a new steel roof in NorCal.
Being from europe one wonder what the outcome would be if the houses was build of brig and tile with power cables in the ground.
You see chimneys and foundations still standing
Adobe bricks and tiles on the roofs.

In a few years, most countries will be spending 5-10% of the government budget on fixing climate crisis disasters. These CA wildfires will end up costing 1/2 trillion dollars. This means all countries will have worse and worse economic problems…
Cleaning up the bush around the big town would help to prevent these really sad situations to happen ! They will need to accept they live in a desert area end of the story!
And our next gov is going to continue not taking climate science seriously
Thanks for the report!
Fun fact, California send 610 million US $ to Israel.
Maybe better spend on tax payers in California !
Donβt build in high risk areas. Period.
By now humans should understand the power of nature with due regards to innocent people who have lost their lives and rest going through huge emotional loss with no fault of theirs….we need to respect the ecosystem..its never too late..
TRUMPmusk must send π° to repair and rebuild ASAP and no right wing nasty cruel arrogant delays. And the corrupt RESNICK's
