The Niger Delta in Nigeria is one of the most polluted areas on earth – due to repeated oil spills. Environmentalists, scientists and lawyers are working together to restore the damage and seek justice for local residents.
For decades, British multinational Shell extracted oil in Nigeria, often with no regard for environmental standards. Oil spills occurred time and again, almost destroying the mangrove forests. Mangroves are essential for ocean biodiversity, and for slowing climate change and are therefore key to the survival of the local population. Now biologists are planting new mangroves, offering fresh hope.
At the same time, lawyers have taken up the fight to ensure a cleanup and compensation for this environmental and public health disaster. In London, they are fighting Shell in court. The company previously offered only paltry compensation to residents of the Niger Delta.
The documentary also shows how local initiatives are pushing ahead with the expansion of solar power plants and providing mediators for communities in the Niger Delta. They aim to steer people away from working in illegal oil refineries, which also pose a major threat to the environment.

These big oil companies are pure evil. They do little to nothing to avoid environmental issues. The come in and destroy communities and continue to do that.
Shell is not actually lying in their written statement at 10:45. There was an older documentary showing how they would "refine" the oil to make diesel. Pirates were dumming every single ounce of oil, which they could no longer use into the rivers, close to the shore where they were living.

Oil is generally seen as black gold, as it has been for countries like Saudi Arabia & the UAE. In their case, it has only enriched a few corrupt politicians & friends. They were projecting NG to become one of the world's leading economies a decade ago, instead they took steps backward, falling behind ZA within the continent. As a matter of fact, the mismanagement of pipelines & uncontrollable theft by locals has led to the oil industry there becoming unprofitable for the major conglomerates, who have mostly given up on operating there.
Is it true that there own people broke Open the pipes to steal the oil and cause all that pollution.???

The Nigerian government allow this on their land so the British aren't solely responsible. Many Nigerian billionaires made their money from working with these foreigners. Nigerian government is notoriously corrupt and also part of this problem.
