Climate change intensifies heatwaves worldwide, turning them into one of the planet’s most dangerous — yet underreported — killers. Over the past year, half of the global population experienced at least one extra month of extreme heat directly linked to human-caused global warming.
During Saudi Arabia’s deadly heatwave, 1,300 people lost their lives, while Southern Africa’s worst drought in a century left 21 million children malnourished. In South Sudan, schools were forced to shut down for weeks as temperatures hit 45°C.
Experts call heatwaves a “silent killer” because fatalities often go unrecognised or are misattributed to other health issues. As global temperatures continue to rise, vulnerable communities face mounting risks.
Today, we speak with a panel of experts to unpack the growing danger and explore both short- and long-term solutions:
Desmond Majekodunmi – Climate Change Expert (Lagos)
Daniel Oladoja – Climate Policy Analyst (Lagos)
Rabiu Abubakar – CEO, Ozone Layer & Climate Change Incentive (Kaduna)
