Mega-Tsunami: How a 650-Foot Wave in Greenland Triggered Global Tremors Every 90 Seconds

In Sept 2023, a massive landslide in Greenland’s Dickson Fjord triggered a 650-foot mega-tsunami. Over 25 million cubic metres of rock and ice crashed into the fjord, equal to 10,000 Olympic pools. The tsunami waves couldn’t escape the narrow fjord, creating a sloshing motion called a seiche. These seiches caused rhythmic seismic pulses every 90 seconds, lasting for nine days and detected worldwide. New satellite tech (NASA’s SWOT) and machine learning helped pinpoint the cause and wave patterns. Data showed water oscillations up to 2 meters across the fjord’s surface. The event was initially a mystery, baffling scientists as no earthquake or eruption was recorded. Climate change-driven glacier melt destabilized the mountainside, triggering the landslide. Experts warn such hidden disasters may increase in the Arctic due to rapid warming. Researchers are urging early-warning systems using real-time seismic and satellite data.
