The Hochvogel—an imposing mountain in the Allgäu Alps—is on the verge of collapse. A gigantic crack runs through its summit, and geologists are certain: the mountain will collapse—the only question is when. The reason? Climate change is melting the permafrost that holds the rock together like glue. Around 260,000 cubic meters of rock could crash into the valley – that’s equivalent to 250 freight trains! The Technical University of Munich is monitoring the mountain with state-of-the-art technology in order to predict the collapse at an early stage. The Hochvogel project is a test case for the future, as such processes are becoming increasingly common in the Alps.
