On June 15, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Peru, near the Callao region, approximately 30 kilometers southwest of the Constitutional Province of Callao, close to the capital city of Lima. The seismic event occurred at 11:35 AM local time (7:35 PM MSK) at a depth of 49 kilometers, as reported by Peru’s National Seismological Center. The intensity of the tremors reached IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale in the epicentral zone, causing noticeable shaking in Lima and surrounding areas. The earthquake triggered landslides and minor structural damage, with reports of collapsed building facades in some parts of the city. According to preliminary data from local authorities, one person lost their life, seven others were injured, and seven medical facilities sustained damage. Social media posts captured the moment of the quake during a football match in Lima, highlighting the widespread impact felt by residents. No tsunami warning was issued, as the earthquake’s characteristics did not indicate a significant risk of tsunami generation. Peru is located within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for high seismic activity due to the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence in the country. This event coincides with a noted global increase in seismic activity, which some studies suggest may be linked to climate change, as shifting environmental conditions, such as glacial melting and sea level rise, alter stress on tectonic plates. Additionally, according to several scientific opinions, this rise in seismicity may also be attributed to cyclical processes occurring deep within the Earth’s interior, such as mantle convection and tectonic plate interactions, which periodically heighten seismic events. This earthquake serves as a reminder of the ongoing seismic risks in the region and the importance of preparedness and resilient infrastructure in the face of both natural, climate-driven, and cyclical geological challenges.
