Chaos in China Today! Brutal Floods Destroy Homes, Cars in Guizhou
Heavy rains that have pounded southwest China since early this week have triggered the worst flash floods in five decades in Guizhou Province. More than 80,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in Rongjiang and Congjiang counties after rivers overflowed and submerged homes up to three meters high. Continuous heavy rainfall and upstream inflows have triggered severe flooding in two counties of Guizhou Province in southwest China, prompting mass evacuations. The rescue process in Guizhou was intensive and coordinated, given that the flash floods that occurred were among the worst in the last 50 years. More than 500 troops of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Chinese People’s Armed Police (PAP), civilian personnel, and militias rushed to the frontline of flood control with life jackets, assault boats, kayaks, and other disaster relief equipment to search and evacuate the trapped people, install flood control baffles, and reinforce flood control embankments. The phenomenon comes amid an earlier and more intense East Asian monsoon season than usual, heightening concerns about the impact of climate change on infrastructure and the safety of residents in disaster-prone areas such as Guizhou.
